Learn words you can
actually say.
Most vocabulary apps stop when you recognise a word. WordEdge keeps going — until you can recall it, spell it, use it in a sentence, and pronounce it well enough to be understood.
Free on iPhone and Android.
Every sense, properly labelled
Each word comes with comprehensive, multiple definitions grouped by part of speech — not just the first meaning a dictionary happens to return.
Say it, and hear it right
Every word includes exercises to help you pronounce it correctly and to train your ear to recognise it when you hear it — not just recognise it on a flashcard.
Recognising a word isn’t knowing it
You have seen ubiquitous a hundred times. Could you use it in a sentence this afternoon? Could you say it out loud without hesitating on the second syllable? Those are three different skills — and the third is the one almost no vocabulary app actually tests.
Pronunciation
Record it, get scored sound by sound — not a flashcard flip.
Meaning
See the word, choose what it means.
Recall
See the meaning, choose the word.
Listening
Hear it, pick the word you heard.
Spelling
Type it letter by letter from the meaning.
Cloze
Fill the gap in a real sentence.
Four steps, one loop
Pick a list, or build your own
Start from a curated list like Business English 500 or Everyday Travel, or add words as you meet them from the built-in dictionary. Everything lands in decks you can nest and rename.
Learn each word properly
Swipe through flip cards showing the word and its pronunciation. Flip for every sense grouped by part of speech — not just the first definition — plus inflections and examples with translations.
Review, tested from every angle
Spaced review rotates between meaning, recall, listening, spelling and cloze, so you are never just recognising a word you would not be able to produce.
Say it, and get told the truth
Record the word and get a score for the whole thing plus every individual sound — including which sound you actually produced instead of the one you meant.
Find the one sound that is letting you down
WordEdge scores your recording sound by sound. Instead of “72%”
you see that your /θ/ came out as /s/, that you
dropped the ending, or that the stress landed on the wrong syllable.
- A score for the word and for every phoneme in it
- Hear your own recording next to the model
- A sound profile across every word you have practised
- Weakest sounds surface first in your next session
Start from a list that already knows where you’re going
Business English, IELTS Academic, Everyday Travel, Phrasal Verbs. Add one to your deck and it becomes yours — your own copy, your own schedule, yours to edit or drop a word from.
- Adopt a list in one tap, keep your own progress
- Lists stay maintained; pull in new words when you want them
- Mark a word “I know this” and it stops coming back
Pairs naturally with ShadowEdge
WordEdge and ShadowEdge are both built by Macrame, and they train two halves of the same skill. WordEdge builds the words themselves — every sense, every phoneme, in isolation. ShadowEdge takes those same words back into real speech: you shadow actual video and podcast audio at full sentence speed, scored the same sound-by-sound way. Learn a word properly here, then hear it fly past in context there.
Before you download
Is WordEdge free?
Yes, the core loop is free: decks, curated lists, flip-card learning and every review mode. Pronunciation scoring beyond the daily allowance and unlimited curated lists are part of Pro.
Which languages does it support?
English is the learning language today, with meanings shown in your own language. More learning languages are on the roadmap.
Does pronunciation scoring need the internet?
Yes. Recordings are scored on our servers. The audio itself is kept only for a little while so you can play it back, then it is deleted — your score and sound profile are kept regardless of plan or payment status.
Do I need to study every day?
No, but it helps. Set a daily goal and per-weekday reminders in Settings, and the streak tracks the days you actually practised.
